The Divine Liturgy and Authorized Prayers
For many, the Orthodox Church of America is a “new church” that is 2000 years old. We are Evangelical but not Protestant ... Orthodox but not Jewish ... Catholic but not Roman.
We’ve believed, taught, preserved, defended and died for the Faith given to the Apostles since the Day of Pentecost! The prayers we use, the rituals (how we do things) & liturgical vestments (what we wear) are the same as that used in the Holy Land since the 3rd & 4th Centuries!
The Divine Liturgy (Lord’s Supper or Holy Mass) was formulated by St. John Chrysostom who was the Archbishop of Constantinople in the 5th Century. The English translation we use has been prepared from the standard Greek, Slavonic, Latin & Arabic Texts used in the Early Church.
It provides an opportunity to appreciate the ancient languages used since Apostolic times, and to promote congregational prayer.
Also included are the Authorized Rituals for General Confession, Prayers Before and After the reception of Holy Communion and Preparatory Payers for celebrating the Divine and Holy Liturgy of the Lord complete with the Rubrics for both Priests and Deacons and the Hierarchical /Pontifical Liturgy used when a Bishop celebrates.
